This is an exciting opportunity for both experienced surgical nurses seeking a new challenge and newly qualified nurses looking to develop their skills within a dynamic surgical environment. Working alongside a forward-thinking multidisciplinary team, you will gain experience across a wide range of day surgery specialties, including orthopaedics, general surgery, minor plastic surgery procedures, pain clinics, and Lithotripsy services, which play a vital role in reducing hospital admissions.

As part of a service that has achieved GIRFT Surgical Hub accreditation, you will be supported to broaden your clinical expertise and develop specialist knowledge in a high-performing surgical setting. The Day Surgery Unit operates Monday to Saturday, 07:00–22:00, offering a varied and rewarding role in a fast-paced environment where patient-centred care is at the heart of everything we do.

Main duties of the job

Responsibilities The unit consists of 22 individual patient pods, providing care for patients undergoing both general and local anaesthetic procedures across a variety of surgical specialties. Key responsibilities include:

• Assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating individualised care for patients throughout their day surgery journey.
• Providing safe, effective and compassionate nursing care from admission through to discharge.
• Working collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to deliver excellent clinical outcomes and a positive patient experience.
• Supporting the delivery of established, standardised care pathways that enable the successful same-day discharge of the majority of day-case patients.
• Delivering pre-operative and post-operative care, including patient education and discharge planning.
• Contributing to the continued success of the Surgical Hub by maintaining high standards of communication and teamwork across departments.
• Ensuring accurate documentation using the Trust's Electronic Patient Record system and adhering to Trust policies, professional standards and best practice guidelines.
• Supporting a culture of continuous improvement, helping the team maintain the excellent levels of patient satisfaction reflected in regular Friends and Family Test feedback.

Experience Essential criteria

• Assess, plan evaluate and implement care ensuring that current research is used.
• Previous experience in Healthcare Sector.
• Evidence of up-to-date standards of clinical practice

Desirable criteria

• Knowledge of or experience in Quality improvement tools, techniques, and methods.
• Knowledge about the GIRFT standards.
• Previous experience of using the EPR.

Education

Essential criteria

• Registered Nurse with the NMC registration.
• Degree in Nursing
• Evidence of Continuing Education \& Professional Development

• Postgraduate Qualification in Nursing or can demonstrate experience of working to this level.
• Post Registration qualification in specialty
• Awareness of the current professional nursing issues.
