Job Description
Role Summary
We are seeking a Cloud Efficiency Engineer to join the Performance Optimization Squad within Core Infra. This hands-on specialist role demands deep expertise in cloud infrastructure cost optimization, with a focus on delivering multi-million-dollar efficiency gains across one of the world’s largest Kubernetes fleets.
In collaboration with senior engineers and a data scientist, you will identify and prioritize opportunities for cost reduction. Your responsibility is to implement these opportunities through a thorough examination of GCP configurations, workload profiles, and Kubernetes resource settings, ensuring the balance between cost reduction, performance, and reliability. Your expertise is vital in executing efficient rightsizing strategies without compromising service reliability.
The Opportunity
The Performance Optimization Squad focuses on achieving systematic efficiency gains overlooked by individual teams. The scope of work includes JVM tuning, autoscaling efficiency, workload placement, and storage optimization.
The need for this role arises from the complexity of cloud cost optimization at scale, requiring specialized knowledge of GCP pricing models, machine type trade-offs, committed use discounts, and Kubernetes scheduling interactions with cloud billing. You will partner with accomplished infrastructure engineers to deliver significant cost-per-unit-of-compute advantages.
What We're Looking For
- 5+ years of experience in cloud infrastructure engineering, with hands-on expertise in cost optimization and resource efficiency (beyond monitoring and reporting).
- Deep understanding of Google Cloud Platform (or equivalent experience with AWS/Azure, with openness to transition to GCP) — familiarity with machine type characteristics, pricing models, and the financial impacts of Kubernetes scheduling.
- Hands-on experience optimizing Kubernetes/GKE workloads at scale — proven track record in rightsizing services, tuning autoscalers, and resolving resource contention issues.
- Strong Java skills to profile JVM-based services, interpret GC logs, adjust heap and thread pool configurations, and assess runtime alternatives — relevant for teams primarily utilizing JVM-based fleets.
- Demonstrated success in implementing cost optimizations that yield measurable savings in a cloud-native environment.
- Ability to skillfully navigate the reliability trade-offs involved in efficiency work.
- Extensive JVM performance tuning experience is a distinct advantage.
