Position Summary:

The Chief Development Geoscientist is the Company’s senior technical authority for Development Geosciences and the principal technical advisor to the Director RDM. The role provides integrated subsurface geoscience assurance and advisory support for field development, reservoir characterization and asset management. Rather than executing asset work directly, the role assures the integration and interpretation of seismic, geological, petrophysical, core and production data to underpin robust geological models, mature development opportunities, and support safe, economic and technically sound field decisions. As the senior-most discipline expert, the Chief Development Geoscientist sets technical standards, assures critical subsurface decisions, promotes innovation and advises on complex geoscience challenges. The position represents the peak technical career role, leading through expertise rather than line management.

Responsibilities:

  • Integrate seismic, well, core, petrophysical, pressure, production and surveillance data to support field development, reservoir characterization and asset maturation.
  • Advise, support and assure 3D geological modelling workflows, including structural frameworks, stratigraphic layering, facies distribution, property modelling, fault frameworks and uncertainty cases for development planning and simulation input.
  • Advise, support and assure regional and field-scale sequence stratigraphic frameworks, well correlations, depositional models and stratigraphic zonation to improve reservoir architecture understanding and prediction of reservoir continuity.
  • Evaluate fracture distribution, fault/fracture connectivity, compartmentalization and their impact on reservoir quality, drainage patterns, well performance, pressure communication and development strategy.
  • Support well planning, target definition, trajectory review, landing zone selection, geo-steering, post-well evaluation and maturation of infill, appraisal and development opportunities.
  • Provide geoscience input to volumetrics, reserves/resources, field development plans, production optimization, reservoir management, depletion planning and opportunity ranking.
  • Interface with Exploration and Appraisal teams to ensure transfer of subsurface knowledge, alignment of geological concepts, incorporation of new discoveries and appraisal results, and smooth transition from exploration/appraisal to development phase.
  • Integrate static geological interpretation with dynamic reservoir engineering data, including production trends, pressure behaviour, well test results and simulation outcomes, to refine models and reduce subsurface uncertainty.
  • Assess geological risks, uncertainties, reservoir connectivity, compartmentalization, depositional setting, structural complexity and their implications for development decisions and investment proposals.
  • Advise and support competency development for geoscience staff by identifying capability gaps, mentoring technical talent, promoting best practices, supporting knowledge transfer and contributing to discipline standards, learning plans and technical career development frameworks.
  • Advise, support and assure interpretation workflows, data quality standards, technical documentation, lessons learned, peer reviews, technology adoption and effective multidisciplinary collaboration across subsurface and operations teams.

Qualification:

  • Degree in Geology, Geophysics, Geoscience or relevant discipline; postgraduate qualification is an advantage.

Experience:

  • At least 15 years of progressive experience, with at least 5 years of international experience in development geoscience across field development, reservoir characterization, geomodelling and asset support.
  • Experience in seismic interpretation, structural and stratigraphic analysis, well correlation, mapping, volumetrics and uncertainty assessment.
  • Exposure to well planning, drilling support, post-well evaluation, reservoir modelling, multidisciplinary studies and technical assurance.

Competencies and Skills:

  • Strong technical understanding of petroleum geology, structural geology, stratigraphy, sedimentology, depositional systems, basin evolution and reservoir architecture in clastic and carbonate settings.
  • Advanced capability in seismic interpretation, well correlation, structural mapping, sequence stratigraphic interpretation, facies analysis, geomorphology and reservoir fairway definition.
  • Ability to advise, support and assure 3D geological modelling workflows, including structural frameworks, stratigraphic grids, facies modelling, petrophysical property distribution, uncertainty cases and model readiness for dynamic simulation.
  • Strong understanding of fracture characterization, fault/fracture networks, natural fracture prediction, compartmentalization, connectivity, pressure communication and implications for well placement and recovery strategy.
  • Competence in integrating static data with dynamic reservoir information, including pressure, production, well test, surveillance and simulation results, to validate interpretations and reduce subsurface uncertainty.
  • Sound knowledge of volumetrics, reserves/resources classification, uncertainty assessment, risk evaluation, development option screening and opportunity maturation from concept to execution.
  • Ability to support exploration and appraisal interfaces by transferring geological concepts, incorporating new well and seismic information, and ensuring continuity between exploration, appraisal and development interpretations.
  • Proficiency in industry-standard geoscience and modelling software for seismic interpretation, mapping, well correlation, geomodelling, volumetrics, uncertainty analysis, data visualization and technical documentation.
  • Ability to perform technical assurance, quality control and peer review of subsurface interpretations, geological models, opportunity evaluations, well proposals and field development inputs.
  • Demonstrates analytical thinking, sound judgement, business awareness, collaboration, communication, mentoring capability, integrity, innovation and delivery focus in multidisciplinary asset teams.
