Job Description
This role is based within the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) Department. The successful candidate(s) will be expected to work flexibly to meet service needs, including evenings and weekends, although the current working pattern is Monday to Friday. The post\-holder will deliver direct clinical care to both individual patients and patient groups within their scope of practice. Following an agreed period, they may also take on responsibility for coordinating departmental activities in the absence of the Department Manager. **Key Responsibilities Include** * Providing supervision and teaching to junior staff, both qualified and unqualified, as well as pre\- and post\-registration students * Ensuring the smooth and efficient running of clinics, while promoting a positive patient experience within the OMFS department * Supporting the Department Manager in delivering high\-quality, person\-centred care that enhances patient independence and overall well\-being This role requires flexibility in working hours, with evening and weekend shifts incorporated into the rota as required. As a Registered Nurse within the department, you will play a key role in upholding the high standards of care associated with our centre of excellence. * Act as a professional role model, demonstrating leadership and supporting junior staff development * Provide expert clinical knowledge and collaborate with the Department Manager and nursing team to promote best practice * Coordinate day\-to\-day running of OMFS clinics, ensuring efficient service delivery and high\-quality patient care * Prepare clinical areas and remain adaptable to work across departments (e.g. ENT, Cardiology, Main Outpatients), following decontamination policies * Assist clinicians with sterile procedures, including minor operations, fine needle biopsies, core biopsies, and nasal endoscopy * Ensure safe handling, storage, and management of hazardous substances (e.g. formalin, liquid nitrogen) * Maintain awareness of HSSD track and trace systems and effective decontamination processes * Demonstrate or work towards competency in wound care, including VAC therapy and compression dressings * Maintain high standards of clinical practice in all nursing procedures * Take responsibility for safe custody, checking, and administration of medications * Comply with clinical governance requirements, promoting patient safety, dignity, and continuous improvement Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust provides hospital services to a growing population of around 700,000 people living across Bedfordshire and the surrounding areas across two busy hospital sites in Bedford and Luton.
