An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 6 Pre-Assessment Nurse at our Royal Gwent Hospital.

This post primarily involves supporting patients through the pre-assessment process so that they can be successfully admitted on their admission date for surgery.

To be responsible for the Pre-Operative assessment of patients to a high standard ensuring patients are case managed and prepared in a safe and timely manner.

You will need to demonstrate continuing professional development and have an understanding of how to improve and provide safe, quality care for patients and their relatives.

Main duties of the job

To function as a competent clinical practitioner within their designated clinical area. To deliver patient care whilst, co-ordinating and overseeing nursing practice.

To perform a physical and diagnostic assessment of patients to ensure suitability for surgery, follow up patients deferred in clinic, offer alternatives to surgery if appropriate and advise educate and/or discharge.

To communicate sensitive information to patients and their families.

To work autonomously and be responsible for individual caseload of pre-assessment patients ensuring they meet individual patient and client needs, ensuring that all patients have appropriate individualised, clinical assessments. Use reflection to critically evaluate own performance and practice to promote high standards of care. To act as resource for health care professionals in the Heath Board.

Have a flexible approach to work to meet the needs of the service.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Qualifications Knowledge \& Experience

Essential criteria

  • Registered General Nurse, Educated to degree level or equivalent supplemented by diploma level specialist training to include Pre-Operative Assessment training/Clinical assessment or DE70 qualification
  • Scope duties - ECG recording \& interpreting, undertaking venepuncture.
  • Relevant experience as a Senior Ward Nurse or Practitioner at Band 5 or above.
  • Previous proven experience in change management within the clinical setting.
  • Evidence of professional development.

Desirable criteria

  • Masters in Professional Practice or working towards.
  • Teaching \& Assessing qualification.
  • Experience of audit and evidence based practice.

Aptitude \& Abilities

Essential criteria

  • Ability to demonstrate how to overcome resistance or barriers to change.
  • Proven leadership and organisational skills
  • Excellent verbal/nonverbal and written communication skills.
  • Able to manage own workload effectively.
  • Knowledge of clinical audit.
  • Working knowledge of MDT team working, clinical governance.

Desirable criteria

  • Ability to speak Welsh
  • Understand research and its usefulness.
