Job Description
Mullen Group Ltd. is one of Canada’s largest logistics providers. We have one of the largest portfolios of logistics companies in North America, providing a wide range of transportation, customs brokerage, warehousing, and distribution services through a network of independently operated businesses.
We are looking for a lawyer to join our team at our head office in Okotoks, Alberta to support our portfolio.
**Why This Role Exists**
Mullen Group operates a large, diversified business across multiple jurisdictions and industries, and our legal department manages a high volume of employment, operational, and corporate legal issues across our diverse group of businesses. We support 44 business units and nearly 9,000 workers. To support this complexity and strengthen our in‑house offerings for the business, we are adding a lawyer who can assume ownership of defined categories of legal matters while working closely with the General Counsel.
This role is designed for a practical, business‑minded lawyer who wants exposure across labour and employment, corporate, and general in‑house legal work, with increasing responsibility and judgment over time. The role offers meaningful responsibility, close mentorship from the General Counsel, and the opportunity to develop strong, practical in‑house judgment.
**Role Overview**
As a member of the in‑house legal team, you will work closely with the General Counsel while independently managing a defined portfolio of legal matters. The role emphasizes labour and employment issues and litigation support, with exposure to commercial contracts and corporate matters as part of a broader in‑house practice.
This is a practical, judgment‑driven role suited to a lawyer who can move matters forward, manage volume, and provide clear, business‑oriented advice in a fast‑paced environment. This role requires a lawyer who is comfortable working with a high degree of independence — identifying issues, forming and recommending a course of action, and advancing matters to resolution, with escalation reserved for strategic or high‑risk decisions.
**Key Responsibilities**
**Labour, Employment \& Workplace Issues**
Labour and employment matters will make up a significant portion of this role.
* Provide day‑to‑day legal support on labour and employment matters, including employment agreements, workplace issues, performance and termination matters, policy interpretation, and compliance questions.
* Support and conduct workplace investigations (including interviewing, evidence review, and reporting), with guidance as appropriate depending on complexity and sensitivity.
* Assist with labour relations issues and collective agreement interpretation, where applicable.
**Litigation, Collections \& Disputes**
* Support and, where appropriate, independently manage litigation and dispute matters, with a particular focus on employment‑related claims, collections, and operational disputes.
* Conduct high‑level review and oversight of pleadings, correspondence, and strategy from external counsel.
* Assist with early case assessment, risk triage, settlement strategy, and file organization.
* Prior litigation or disputes experience is a strong asset.
**Commercial \& Corporate Support**
* Review and provide high‑level legal input on a range of commercial agreements (e.g., NDAs, service agreements, SOWs and other operational contracts), primarily from a risk‑identification and issue‑spotting perspective, with limited drafting and negotiation as required to support business operations.
* Support merger and acquisition activity, including due diligence coordination and post‑closing integration support.
**Policy, Governance \& Risk Management**
* Draft, review, and maintain company policies and procedures to ensure clarity, consistency, and compliance across the organization.
* Help ensure consistent legal positions in our decentralized operating environment.
**External Counsel \& Business Partnering**
* Liaise with and manage external counsel on litigation and specialized matters, including scoping work, reviewing output, and managing cost.
* Act as a legal resource for our business units, providing practical, actionable advice aligned with business objectives.
* Take ownership of assigned matters from intake to resolution, including issue‑spotting, risk assessment, and recommending practical courses of action.
* Engage directly and routinely with business and HR leaders, communicating legal advice clearly and concisely and translating legal risk into practical, business‑focused guidance.
**Minimum Qualifications**
* Law degree from a Canadian accredited law school.
* Membership or eligible for membership to the Alberta Bar.
* At least 3 years of legal experience, preferably litigation. In\-house experience is not required.
**What We’re Looking For**
* A lawyer with strong legal judgment and a practical, business‑minded approach.
* Comfort handling labour and employment matters and litigation support in a high‑volume, in‑house environment.
* Prior experience with litigation, disputes, or collections is highly desirable. Prior corporate experience is not required.
* Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to clearly explain risk and recommendations to non‑legal stakeholders.
* Demonstrated ability to work independently, including confidence engaging directly with non‑legal stakeholders.
* Ability to manage competing priorities and know when to escalate issues.
* Interest in developing as a well‑rounded in‑house lawyer — a perfect fit across every substantive area is not required, as mentorship, feedback, and learning are part of the role.
This role is best suited to a lawyer who enjoys operating with autonomy, exercising judgment, and serving as a practical legal advisor to business leaders — someone who is comfortable owning matters, making recommendations, and communicating clearly without needing constant direction.
