Job Description
**Deadline:** Fri 31 Jul 2026 00:00:00 UTC * Deadline: Fri 31 Jul 2026 00:00:00 UTC * Algeria: Tindouf. * Sandblast Arts Company Information Sandblast is a UK human rights and arts charity founded in 2005, supporting the Saharawi people of Western Sahara, who have lived as refugees in the Algerian desert for nearly 50 years. Our flagship programme, Desert Voicebox, provides primary school children in the Boujdour refugee camp with after\-school English, music, and creative arts education, delivered alongside locally trained Saharawi women teachers. * Experience: 3 YEARS * Number of positions: 2 * Freelance Position * Degree Required **Job Summary** Details of Position Sandblast Arts is seeking two experienced English Language Teachers to join Desert Voicebox, our after\-school English programme for Saharawi refugee children in the Boujdour refugee camp in southwest Algeria. The Saharawi people have lived as refugees in the Algerian desert for nearly fifty years in one of the world's longest\-running and least\-known displacement crises. Desert Voicebox is the only source of English language education available to the primary school\-aged children we serve. For these children, English is more than a subject. It is a language of agency, advocacy, and opportunity. The two teachers will arrive and work together, leading English classes across Levels 1 to 4 for children aged approximately 8 to 12\. Classes have a maximum of 15 students. Children begin with little or no English and build toward a strong A2 or early B1 level over four years. This is a deeply collaborative placement. Both teachers will work closely alongside our two local Saharawi women teachers, Nanaha and Tarba, in a structured team\-teaching model. The aim is not only to deliver strong English teaching to children but to strengthen the classroom practice, lesson planning, and confidence of the local teachers through daily shared teaching and reflection. Desert Voicebox uses the Macmillan Learning Lands curriculum as its core framework. Teachers will work from this while adapting and enriching content to better reflect the children's lived reality, community, and communication goals. Teaching takes place for approximately 3 hours per day, five days a week, alongside planning, reflection, and collaboration. You will live with a Saharawi host family in the camp throughout the placement, an immersive experience that is often one of the most memorable parts of the placement. **Timing** Virtual preparation meetings: 7 to 14 August 2026 Main onsite placement: 25 September to 18 December 2026 Follow\-up visits in 2027: two short visits of up to 2 weeks each, likely one before and one after Ramadan, with exact dates to be confirmed ****Required Qualifications And Experience**** Native or fluent English speaker At least 2 years of experience teaching English as a second language to primary\-aged children A recognised ELT qualification such as CELTA, Trinity CertTESOL, Level 5 TEFL/TESOL Diploma, CELT\-P, CELT\-S, DELTA, or MA TESOL Strong lesson planning, curriculum adaptation, and classroom management skills Experience collaborating closely with other teachers through shared planning, co\-teaching, or observation Adaptability and confidence in a low\-resource, cross\-cultural setting *Please note that this is not an entry\-level placement. Initial certificates are not sufficient on their own and must be accompanied by substantial relevant classroom experience.* **Desirable** Experience working in a refugee camp or non\-Western educational context Proven experience of team teaching An informed understanding of the history and plight of Saharawi Refugees ****How To Apply**** Please send your CV and a short paragraph explaining why you are suited to the role. We aim to respond to all enquiries within one week. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to a first round interview with our Assistant Director, followed where appropriate by a second round conversation with our Founder. We are actively recruiting between April and September 2026\. **Also recruiting: Creative Arts and Expression Educators** Alongside our English teaching placements, Sandblast is also currently looking for Creative Arts and Expression Educators to lead workshops for the same primary\-aged children at Desert Voicebox. These are separate placements available from mid\-October 2026 for a one month stay, with longer stays of up to 2\-3 months possible depending on fit. We welcome practitioners from a wide range of creative disciplines including music, visual art, theatre and performance, photography, dance, and movement. Past workshops have included percussion and rhythm\-based ensemble work, art from trash sessions using recycled materials, theatre games and clowning, and photography and visual storytelling projects. These workshops have had a genuinely lasting impact on children's confidence, creativity, and sense of possibility. We are looking for someone with strong skills in at least one creative field, at least two years of experience leading workshops for children, and the adaptability to work independently in a low\-resource, cross\-cultural setting. An ELT background is a welcome bonus but is not required. Fluent English is essential and Spanish is a useful additional asset. Sandblast covers accommodation, food, and in\-country transport for the first month. Creative arts volunteers are responsible for their own international flights. If this sounds like you, please get in touch with your CV and a short note about your creative background and the kinds of workshops you would be interested in leading. **Qualifications** Candidates with a postgraduate qualification in TESOL, Applied Linguistics, or Education, or those holding a DELTA or DipTESOL, are particularly encouraged to apply given the pedagogically demanding and collaborative nature of this role. Salary and Benefits An honorarium package of 2,500 is offered for the 12\-week onsite placement, covering: 600 stipend 1,260 food and accommodation in the refugee camps Up to 500 toward return flights to Tindouf from a destination in Europe 80 toward external transport costs outside Algeria 60 toward travel insurance In\-country transport from Tindouf airport to the refugee camps is also covered.
