Lead DevOps Engineer (SFIA Level 5\)
Full\-time interim contract
Location: Newcastle (Hybrid)
Overview
We are seeking a Lead DevOps Engineer operating at SFIA Level 5 to lead and deliver cloud\-native platform and DevOps capabilities for a public sector end\-client via a tech services consulting business. You will take ownership of secure, automated infrastructure and delivery pipelines, advising stakeholders, driving standards, and ensuring reliable operations across containerized workloads in a regulated, security\-conscious environment.
Key Responsibilities
\- Lead DevOps delivery across cloud\-native platforms with autonomy and accountability consistent with SFIA Level 5\.
\- Design, build, and operate AWS infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code (Terraform) with strong governance and repeatability.
\- Implement and maintain CI/CD pipelines using GitLab CI to enable reliable, traceable, and secure deployments.
\- Build and support container platforms using Docker and Kubernetes, including operational monitoring for containerized workloads.
\- Automate operational and delivery tasks using Bash and Python, improving developer experience and reducing manual effort.
\- Implement and enforce identity and access controls using AWS IAM and security best practices across environments.
\- Support API/Web SSO gateway fundamentals using OIDC/OAuth and integrate policy\-based authorization using Open Policy Agent (OPA).
\- Work across distributed teams and stakeholders, providing clear technical direction, pragmatic decision\-making, and delivery leadership.
\- Contribute to secure\-by\-design delivery practices suitable for public sector and regulated contexts, including auditability and compliance\-aligned controls.
Essential Skills \& Experience
\- Demonstrable capability operating at SFIA Level 5 (advise, ensure, influence, broad responsibility, autonomy).
\- Strong hands\-on AWS experience including VPC, IAM, S3, Lambda, CodeArtifact, and exposure to SageMaker.
\- Proven Infrastructure as Code delivery with Terraform in production environments.
\- Strong CI/CD implementation experience with GitLab CI pipelines.
\- Strong containerization and orchestration experience with Docker and Kubernetes.
\- Automation and scripting proficiency in Bash and Python.
\- Monitoring/observability experience for containerized workloads.
\- Identity and security fundamentals including IAM, OIDC/OAuth, and policy\-as\-code/authorization patterns (OPA).
\- Ability to lead delivery in a consulting engagement, balancing stakeholder needs, delivery deadlines, and operational stability.
Desirable Skills \& Experience
\- Broader cloud\-native experience across AWS and Azure.
\- Experience delivering in public sector and/or regulated environments with strong security and compliance expectations.
\- Experience with fixed\-scope or milestone\-based delivery models and associated governance.

\- Establishes credibility quickly with engineers and stakeholders through clear technical leadership and delivery ownership.
\- Improves reliability, repeatability, and security of infrastructure and deployment processes through IaC and CI/CD.
\- Ensures container platforms are operable, observable, and secure, with pragmatic standards that teams can follow.
\- Strengthens identity, access, and policy controls using IAM, OIDC/OAuth patterns, and OPA where appropriate.
