Job Description
**Your New Company**
You’ll be joining a privately held, fast‑growing construction and real‑estate development group comprising more than 40 companies operating under a single entrepreneurial leader. The organization is known for its bold growth strategy, hands‑on leadership, and ability to move quickly on major residential and commercial development projects.
The founder is a high‑achieving, direct, and driven operator who values candour, problem‑solving, and legal partners capable of matching his pace and rigor. The environment is dynamic, often intense, and exceptionally rewarding for those who thrive on autonomy and high accountability.
This newly created role exists because the organization is ready to bring more legal expertise in‑house (particularly around litigation) and wants someone who can build the function from the ground up while still partnering with external counsel on highly complex matters.
**Your New Position**
As Lead Legal Counsel, Construction Litigation, you will operate as the organization’s primary in‑house legal authority. Roughly 65% of your mandate will focus on litigation, particularly construction disputes, while the remaining 35% will involve drafting, reviewing, and negotiating commercial agreements.
In this role, you will:
* Act as the internal legal point person for all disputes, claims, and litigation strategy.
* Draft, negotiate, and review key commercial contracts across the development portfolio.
* Serve as a trusted advisor to the executive team, translating candid conversations into clear, actionable legal guidance.
* Collaborate closely with long‑standing senior operators within the organization, earning credibility through sound judgment and dependable execution.
* Manage relationships with external counsel, stepping in to bridge communication and strategy on highly technical or complex matters.
* Operate with significant independence, shaping the legal function’s foundations, standards, and processes.
Hybrid attendance is expected, with approximately two in‑person days per month at the company’s primary operations hub. Depending on active litigation, this may fluctuate. For candidates considering relocation, temporary housing may be provided for the first six months.
**What You’ll Need to Succeed**
* 10\+ years of legal practice, including 5\+ years in commercial or corporate litigation; direct construction‑law experience is highly preferred.
* Strong courtroom and negotiation acumen, with confidence managing litigation strategy end‑to‑end.
* Exceptional drafting skills across contracts, agreements, and internal policies.
* Ability to manage a demanding, fast‑moving workload with independence and sound judgment.
* Comfortable interacting with a highly entrepreneurial, direct, and fast‑thinking executive—able to communicate clearly, concisely, and confidently.
* High integrity, professionalism, and resilience; able to balance assertiveness with diplomacy.
* Strong relationship‑building skills, particularly with internal operational leaders and external legal partners.
**What You’ll Get in Return**
* $300,000–$350,000 annual salary, with no bonus component.
* Medical and dental benefits starting on day one.
* A newly created role where you can set the standard, build the function, and influence organizational strategy.
* A high‑impact environment with exposure to significant construction and development litigation.
* Hybrid work structure with modest onsite expectations.
* Free short‑term housing (up to six months) if relocating.
* One week off at Christmas plus three additional weeks of paid vacation.
