Job Description
First Steps Together is seeking a practical, relationship\-driven Vocational Teacher to deliver engaging programmes for KS4 and KS5 learners with SEND. This role focuses on vocational pathways, skilled trades including but not exhaustive \- Bricklaying, Woodwork, Plastering supporting learners to develop practical competence, confidence, and employability skills. You will be an excellent practitioner with strong behaviour management and the ability to adapt learning approaches to support learners who may experience barriers with regulation, engagement, attendance, or progress. You will create a safe, structured and aspirational learning environment where every student can succeed. Key Responsibilities Plan and deliver high\-quality vocational teaching to KS4 and KS5 learners in areas mentioned above in areas of building, installing and basic maintenance in these trades. Differentiate learning to meet individual needs, including learners with autism, ADHD, SEMH, communication needs, and/or learning difficulties. Use practical, hands\-on teaching strategies alongside theory to build skill mastery and real\-world understanding. Assess learners' progress, record evidence of outcomes (including practical competencies), and provide clear feedback and next steps. Establish clear routines, expectations and boundaries to create a calm and consistent learning culture. Apply effective behaviour and regulation strategies, including de\-escalation and restorative approaches, aligned with school policies. Maintain a safe working environment, ensuring correct use of tools, equipment and PPE, and follow health and safety procedures and risk assessments. Work collaboratively with colleagues, support staff, and leadership to deliver a coherent vocational offer and support personalised learning plans and reviews. Person Specification The criteria below will be used for shortlisting and appointment. Ability to teach vocational skills in skilled trades to KS4/KS5 learners. QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) \- Desirable Strong, consistent behaviour management with a calm and relational approach. Relevant vocational qualifications (e.g., City \& Guilds / NVQ Level 2/3\+) and/or significant industry experience. Ability to adapt teaching to support learners with additional needs and barriers to engagement. Experience teaching in SEND, alternative provision, PRU, or with learners with SEMH needs. Confidence in delivering practical learning safely and managing a workshop/learning environment effectively. Experience delivering accredited vocational qualifications (e.g., BTEC, NCFE, City \& Guilds, ASDAN). Strong communication skills and the ability to build positive relationships with learners, families and colleagues. First Aid qualification and/or additional workshop safety training (e.g., manual handling, COSHH awareness). Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
