Job Description
Hamilton\-Madison House is a nonprofit settlement house dedicated to improving the quality of life of its community, primarily the Two Bridges/Chinatown area of Manhattan's Lower East Side. The House provides a wide range of programs and services designed to enhance the quality of life for all residents of the Two Bridges/Chinatown area and throughout New York City’s five boroughs, including childcare, youth development, senior services, behavioral health, and immigrant and community services.
The primary role of the **Accounting Specialist** is to support the Finance staff in managing day to day financial transactions, budgeting and reporting.
**Responsibilities**:
* The Accounting Specialist is responsible for providing accounting support for Hamilton\-Madison House’s government contracts, including budgets, financial reporting, preparing vouchers and justifying expenses for drawdowns
* The Accountant will also assist with the monthly close process, financial reporting, collaborate with colleagues of the Finance Department regularly, pitch\-in for colleagues as needed, and provide excellent support to staff across the organization.
* This role reports to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and requires a high level of accountability and responsibility.
* Process HMH bi\-weekly payroll and other payroll related duties as assigned by the CFO
* Responsible for recording and processing Accounts Receivable, daily banking transactions
* Assist with updating Accounts Payable, cut checks and issue other payments, as necessary
* Assist with monthly closing of the books and with general entry
* Assist with preparation of financial statements (monthly, quarterly and annual) and supporting schedules
* Assist with the preparation of financial reports for submission to funding sources as needed
* Support financial analysis and compliance with internal policies and procedures consistent with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (“GAAP”).
* This role requires great attention to detail, a strong ability to multi\-task and work independently, and the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
* Keep current knowledge of GAAP, federal and NY state policies, directives, and accounting changes
**Minimum Qualifications**:
* 2\-3 years of relevant work experience, preferably within the finance department of a nonprofit organization
* Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
* Excellent financial analysis skills
* Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications; advanced Excel skills are required
* Highly organized and detail oriented; able to plan, manage and successfully complete multiple concurrent projects with deadlines.
* Excellent interpersonal, teamwork and communication skills; ability to develop collaborative relationships with staff and pitch\-in for colleagues when necessary
**Compensation:** $25\.27 per hour
**Hours:** Monday to Friday, 9am\-5pm, 35 hours per week (In\-Person)
