Reporting to the Supervisor, Finance Projects, the Accountant – Fixed Assets/Capital Expenditures following Company and AAD policies and procedures and generally accepted accounting principles, ensures the delivery of timely and accurate reporting and forecasting of fixed assets and capital expenditures, manages property tax payments and prepares capital budgets.
Responsibilities:
* Ensures the Asset Register module remains in balance with the general ledger and administers the project costing module to ensure that completed projects are closed.
* Monitors and tracks all capital projects for cost overruns. Liaises with project managers to obtain explanations for significant budget overruns.
* Reviews initial requests for capital projects for accuracy and to ensure that all supporting documentation is attached. Coordinates approval of the projects at all levels of the organization according to the prescribed approval matrix.
* Prepares various analyses of both current and historical capital projects for use by management.
* Prepares the capital spending forecast by reviewing historical trends as well as sourcing input from various departments.
* Responsible for creating the annual depreciation budget and journaling the monthly depreciation for assets that are uniquely depreciated.
* Reconciles multiple capital and property tax related accounts on a monthly basis and enters any resulting journal entries.
* Reviews Operating Budget repairs and maintenance expense accounts bi\-monthly to track any spending that is capital in nature and connects with departments to correct any costs to capital.
* Manages property tax filings and payments for all branches and Home Office. Supports any tax assessment appeals and reviews any recommendations. Responsible for creating the annual budget for property tax.
* Completes periodic survey requests from varying governing bodies (i.e. Stats Canada, Municipal offices) with information relating to capital spending, property related inquiries.
* Processes monthly EFT payments from employees on leave.
* Supports appeals for land expropriations by compiling documentation of consulting and development costs incurred required to receive settlements from the municipality.
* Performs other duties, as required.
Requirements:
* Completion of a university degree or college diploma in accounting. Pursuing a CPA designation would be an asset.
* 2\-3 years related accounting experience, with 1 year of fixed asset/capital expenditure experience.
* Possess a keen sense of initiative with a demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
* Demonstrated ability to work with a minimum of supervision, and excellent oral and written communication skills including memo and report writing.
* Demonstrated judgment and decision\-making skills with experience investigating and analyzing financial information to formulate conclusions.
* Intermediate to advanced computer skills including MS Excel and work experience with an accounting software package.
* Self\-motivated with the ability to work effectively independently or as part of a team.
* Excellent attention to detail and consistently high level of accuracy.
* Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills; verbal, written and presentation.
* Demonstrated strong customer service skills with the ability to partner will all levels of the organization.
